I have migraines, but I hate taking medicines.  What about the Cefaly device?

We here at PHCR don’t like putting our patients on medicines either. Sometimes they are necessary to control a patient’s migraines but certainly we are open to alternative therapy and non-oral options. We have been offering the Cefaly since our opening day and have had much success with it. Cefaly has been around since 2008 and has had a few facelifts along the way. Patients that have been with us for sometime will remember our “wonder woman” device with the arms that went over your ears. The device is now connected via magnets to the self-adhesive electrode and is much easier to put on yourself. It is also now rechargeable which was a great addition! The Cefaly works by sending small electrical impulses to the trigeminal nerve in your forehead. Migraines involve the trigeminal system extensively and stimulation of this nerve can decrease headache frequency and intensity. Most of my patients have described the stimulation as a buzzing and they often will even find it relaxing, falling asleep with the device connected. The device now offers two different settings; one for rescue therapy and one for preventative therapy. I have had many patients use it for both. The new version of the device also has different lights that flash so you know which setting you are using. It really does not have any systemic side effects and is safe for all types of patients. If you still aren’t sure, call for an appointment and we can have you try a session for yourself.
