You can burn the candle at both ends, but it will leave you burned
If you are anything like me, you put a lot of pressure on yourself. There are so many expectations for us from ourselves as well as from others. Some expectation of excellence is a good thing. It is what drives us to achieve, but when that pressure exceeds reality it sets us up for failure. You can’t expect yourself to be perfect. No one is no matter what online images lead you to believe. Living in a constant state of stress is not a quality life. You can’t be everything to everyone. The best thing you can be is yourself. There is only one you in the world and no one can take your place. Work at being the best you there is and leave it there. Pushing yourself a little is a good thing but pushing yourself to be something you are not is a terrible idea.
And why is a headache specialist writing this you ask? Because stress can make your headaches, including migraines, worse. Also, this doctor really cares about you. Yes, you. It is not just a statement I say for my marketing. I truly care about every patient that walks through my door. I like to believe that we are a different kind of medical practice. PHCR is here to help you manage and resolve your headaches but we also enjoy being your partner in this journey on every aspect. So, it breaks my heart to see young adults floundering by their own hand because of pressure they have put on themselves. Not just the pain of the migraine but the pain in their hearts as well.
The best thing to do when you feel stress is to find ways to relax. Yes, that will help your headaches but it will also help you in this high-pressure world overall. I wish I could tell you that there is one sure fire way to do this, but there is not. You have to find what relaxes you. It could be yoga, meditation, jogging, dancing, knitting, or sudoku puzzles. It doesn’t matter what it is. The key is to make it a habit. Relax even if you don’t think you need to and especially when you do. Your body will learn what that state feels like and find it easier over time. Here’s to trying new ways to relax, and enjoying every day like it was just a day at the beach.
